Escalante, UT

About

The Loubird Inn occupies a restored 1905 pioneer farmhouse on Escalante's Main Street, about 45 miles east of Bryce Canyon National Park along Scenic Byway 12. It's a small, carefully tended property — four rooms in the main homestead plus adjacent cottages — that trades hotel anonymity for genuine character: original farmhouse bones, local artwork on the walls, shaded porch space, and a garden that earns its keep on a warm southern-Utah evening.

Rooms and Amenities

Each room has a private entrance with a covered deck and outdoor table, in-room coffee, Roku TV, air conditioning, and a compact fridge. Free Wi-Fi and free parking are standard. The guest lounge is a good place to sort out the next day's plans; the common areas have a relaxed, house-borrowed feel rather than a branded-motel one.

Location and Access

Escalante sits at the edge of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and makes a natural base for day trips to Coyote Gulch, Slot Canyons, and the Devils Garden trailheads — most within 20–40 miles. Bryce Canyon is roughly an hour's drive west on Highway 12. The inn is walkable to Escalante's small cluster of restaurants and outfitters.

Planning Notes

The Loubird operates seasonally. Verify availability directly at theloubird.com before booking; the property has occasionally taken hiatuses between seasons. It suits independent travelers who want a quiet, characterful stay rather than resort amenities.

The Loubird Inn was the perfect place for our stay in Escalante. The gardens are lovely and we enjoyed sitting on the porch and reading after a day of hiking and driving. The guest lounge area provided dishes and kitchen needs. Truly a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. And the family that runs it are delightful.

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Loubird! The place was very clean, comfortable, quaint & artsy (which I love as an artist myself, of course!) and had everything we needed. We especially liked having a table/night stand at each side of the bed and two luggage racks. Also an in-room tea kettle, with teas and instant coffee was greatly appreciated. These are small things, but add up to big convenience when traveling. We did use the microwave and some dishes & utinsels in the quest lounge/lobby, which was greatly appreciated and helpful. Thanks for a very nice stay at the Inn!

The cutest little Inn. I love the garden out back. It’s one of those places where you can just sit on the patio and read. Love it.

I did not expect to fall in love with a tiny town of like, 800 people with no "real" hotels (I've had seriously mixed experiences with independent places to stay). By far and away, Loubird was my favorite place to stay along my 3 week road trip out west - and I wish I wasn't so tightly programmed so I could've stayed in a cozy blob snuggled in the bed for a while longer. I still probably got to Capitol Reef National Park an hour or 2 later than intended because I stuck around... I absolutely loved my cozy room - within about an hour of anything you could probably want to see in the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. Within a mile of all the places to eat in Escalante, UT and literally right on UT Scenic Highway 12 - but the room wasn't noisy because there isn't a ton of crazy traffic there. I absolutely fell in love with the town - I told friends that if I ever went missing, the first place they should check is Escalante and quite probably my room (the Canyon room) at the Loubird. There are grills outside and a hammock for reading, and the weather in Escalante was amazing (I'm used to the East Coast swampy heat). I desperately want to go back and get snowed into that little tiny room or to stay for longer any time of year - it feels like the perfect retreat if you want to hide somewhere for a week to write a novel or hide from society. I'm already trying to figure out how to go back - it's so out of the way and hard to get to from the East Coast, but absolutely worth it.
