West Hunt Trail

A primitive connector trail past Adams Head

(0)
Escalante, UT

About

West Hunt Trail is a primitive, unmaintained-feel connector in Dixie National Forest, linking Mt. Dutton Road south to West Hunt Creek Road and the trail network above Red Canyon. It's used more by mountain bikers and backcountry travelers than casual hikers — the north end climbs steeply around the flank of Adams Head peak before dropping to the valley floor, where the grade mellows through standing timber and sagebrush meadows.

Good to know

  • Expect deadfall and faint tread in a few stretches where cow paths and thick sage obscure the route — this is route-finding terrain, not a groomed trail
  • Much of the worst deadfall from a 2002 fire has since fallen and been cleared, but conditions can still vary year to year
  • Functions as a north-south link in the broader trail and forest road network rather than a standalone destination hike
