Under the Point Trail

A 5.2-mile route beneath Powell Point with Bryce views

About

Under the Point Trail is a 5.2-mile out-and-back route in Dixie National Forest that traces the base of Powell Point, dropping into a series of gullies coming off the point and climbing back over a ridge after each one. The terrain shifts repeatedly between wide-open views stretching for miles and pockets of dense forest, sometimes just steps apart.

Trail details

  • Crosses white rock washed down from the upper layers of the Claron Formation — the same pink-and-white cliff-forming rock that defines Bryce Canyon, laid down in a lakebed some 60 million years ago
  • At a saddle about 1.5 miles in, there's a view of Bryce Canyon National Park roughly 14 miles off, along with the Paunsaugunt Plateau — a natural turnaround point for a shorter outing
  • Access is via Forest Road 148 off Highway 12, following signs toward Stump Spring trailhead

As Forest Service land rather than park interior, this trail follows the more permissive Dixie National Forest rules — dogs are generally welcome, and dispersed camping is common in the surrounding area.
