Seaman's Canyon
A homestead canyon with a rough backcountry road, not a foot trail.
About
Seaman's Canyon takes its name from John and Alice Seaman, who homesteaded here in the mid-1800s and ran a lumber mill on the site. It sits along US-89 near mile marker 100, closer to Long Valley than to the town of Alton proper, and today the canyon is better known as the site of a covered-wagon glamping resort than as a hiking destination — there's no maintained trail or trailhead into the canyon itself.
The recreational draw in this stretch is Seaman Canyon Road, a rough, washboarded dirt route best run in a 4WD vehicle, that leads back toward exposed rock layers and petrified wood along an old riverbed. It connects toward the Petrified Hollow area rather than offering a foot trail with a defined destination, so treat it as a backcountry drive rather than a day hike.
