Red Hollow Canyon Trailhead

A free, accessible slot canyon worth stopping for on any southern Utah road trip.

About

Red Hollow Canyon is one of those places that earns its reputation without charging admission. It's a slot canyon outside Orderville that sits right off the main road, no long dirt track required. That alone makes it stand out from most slot canyon experiences in the region.

The hike in takes about 30 minutes from the parking area, mostly flat walking through sandy creek bed. (Bring an extra pair of shoes or accept that your current ones are going to get dusty.) Follow the main creek bed and you'll find it. The canyon itself runs less than 300 meters, with smooth sculpted walls, a few tight squeezes, and enough open space that kids can move around comfortably. Reviewers have compared the look to Antelope Canyon, which tells you something about the light and color inside.

The whole outing is easy to moderate. There are a few spots where water pools up depending on the season, so check conditions before you go. Most people are in and out in under two hours, which makes it a natural stop between Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park rather than a full day commitment.

It's free, it's accessible, and it delivers the kind of slot canyon experience that usually requires a permit, a guide, or a long drive down a washboard road. For anyone doing the southern Utah circuit, Red Hollow Canyon is worth building 90 minutes into your schedule.

Best Time to Visit

Flash flooding is a serious hazard in all slot canyons, including Red Hollow. Heavy rain anywhere in the upstream drainage can push a flood through the canyon within minutes, even when skies look clear at the entrance. Check the weather forecast for the full upstream area — not just Orderville — before entering. Water also pools in sections of the canyon floor depending on the season; conditions can change after recent rain. Spring and fall tend to offer the most reliable dry-weather windows. Avoid entering during or immediately after any storm activity.

Trail Tips

  • The sandy creek bed approach will coat footwear in dust — wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty, or bring a spare pair to change into afterward.
  • Slow down once you are inside — the walls curve and concentrate color in ways that reward a careful look rather than a quick pass-through.
  • The tight squeeze sections are manageable for most adults, but anyone with concerns about confined spaces should be aware the walls close in at several points.
  • Cell service may be limited in the area; download any offline maps before leaving Orderville so you have navigation on hand throughout the approach.

Getting There

Red Hollow Canyon sits just off the main road outside Orderville, with no long dirt road approach required. The parking area is accessible without a high-clearance vehicle, which sets it apart from many slot canyon access points in the region. The total outing runs under two hours for most visitors, making it a practical stop between Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park rather than a dedicated destination requiring a full day.

What to Expect on Red Hollow Canyon Trail

The approach from the parking area is mostly flat, following a sandy creek bed for roughly 30 minutes to reach the canyon entrance. Once inside, the canyon runs less than 300 meters through smooth sculpted sandstone walls that close in at several points to form tight squeezes. The light and color inside the slot are the main draw — the walls curve and fold in ways that concentrate warm tones even in diffuse light. Despite the narrowing sections, the canyon has enough open space that children can move through comfortably. The overall outing is easy to moderate, with no significant elevation gain and a short total distance that suits most fitness levels.

Off Hwy 89, drive east on a new paved road at the pickle ball courts, past a ballfield and along new 21 lot development (Red Valley Heights), left towards the canyon at another set of pickle ball courts. Follow it up until the road ends, and park. There are a couple of horse corals prior and there where you can ride. The horses don't go through the slot canyon. You hike on a trail that at drops into the wash. Walk up the wash, to where you find the slot canyon. You walk through, climbing over a few boulders. Towards the end, there are a few narrow climbs. It dead ends for most. Getting beyond will require some climbing skills and gear. You should turn around here. Most children and adult can do it.

If you’re driving from Zion to Bryce (or Bryce to Zion), make the 3 minute detour to Red Hollow Slot Canyon. It ended up being one of the most fun stops of our entire Utah trip. From the parking area, our round-trip was only 1.2 miles. The route isn’t marked, but it’s easy enough to figure out. Walk down one of the many paths about a tenth of a mile to the sandy wash, turn left, and simply follow the wash until it dead-ends into the slot canyon. The slot canyon itself only takes about 5–10 minutes to explore from front to back, but you’ll probably spend much longer taking pictures and climbing around. The walls get incredibly narrow, with a few squeezes that require you to turn sideways. If you’re a larger person, those sections could be “challenging”. 🥸 For runners and hikers, this is the perfect quick adventure. No need to carry water or pack a day bag-you can be in and out in under an hour. We finished in 34 minutes, including plenty of photo stops. The best part? Solitude. We had the entire slot canyon to ourselves and only passed one other family on the hike back. This isn’t a polished national park attraction with signs and crowds. It’s a simple, free adventure that feels like you’re discovering something on your own. If you enjoy exploring and don’t mind a little route-finding, don’t miss it. It was one of our favorite surprises of the trip.

Use Ball Field Rd to get in the right direction. There are 4-5 obstacles to climb over.
