About
Powell Point Trail is the short walk out to Powell Point itself, threading through mixed conifer forest — including bristlecone pine — to a 300-degree vista at the tip of the Table Cliff Plateau. The trail runs about 0.8 miles with only around 100 feet of elevation change, easy by distance but remote by access: reaching the trailhead from Tropic means 7.4 miles west on Highway 12 to the Bryce Canyon/Antimony junction, then north on the high-clearance, often 4-wheel-drive Johns Valley Road.
Good to know
- Rock at the point is pale White Member limestone from the Claron Formation, with orange Pink Member cliffs and hoodoos visible below
- This is not a maintained trail — footing can be unstable above sheer drop-offs
- Extremely dangerous during thunderstorms; stay off the point and any high ground when cumulonimbus clouds are nearby
- Open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding
