A steep half-mile up to a CCC-era lookout gazebo

About
Posey Lookout Trail climbs from Posey Lake Campground in Dixie National Forest to a CCC-built lookout gazebo, gaining about 400 feet in just over half a mile — short but steep. Posey Lake sits at 8,800 feet on the Colorado Plateau, reached via Scenic Byway 12 and Pine Creek Road just past Escalante, with the campground road paved the whole way.
Good to know
- About 1.4 miles round trip with roughly 459 feet of elevation gain
- Best April through October
- Fall color along the route is a draw, along with the view from the gazebo itself
- U.S. Forest Service land — dogs are generally welcome and the nearby campground allows dispersed-style access typical of national forest, unlike the park interior
