Ponderosa Canyon Overlook
A pull-out view over pine, hoodoos, and the Grand Staircase

About
Ponderosa Canyon Overlook sits along the park's southern scenic drive at about 8,900 feet, roughly 15 miles in between Agua Canyon and Black Birch Canyon, close to Rainbow Point. It's named for the huge ponderosa pines rising from the canyon floor, though the overlook itself is surrounded by Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir. The view opens over a small amphitheater of hoodoos and orange cliffs, with the layered Grand Staircase visible in the distance — especially striking in early morning light.
Good to know
- Reached by pull-out parking directly off the scenic drive — no hike required for the overlook itself
- Open year-round, weather permitting
- The Agua Canyon Connecting Trail, which drops from a nearby overlook into the same canyon system to meet the Under-the-Rim Trail, is currently closed due to storm damage — check current NPS conditions before planning around it
