Day Hike

Peekaboo Loop / Hat Shop / Under-the-Rim Trailhead

One trailhead, three ways into Bryce Canyon's backcountry

(0)
Bryce Canyon City, UT

About

The parking area at Bryce Point, at the southeastern end of Bryce Point Road, is the shared trailhead for three of Bryce Canyon's backcountry routes: the Peekaboo Loop, the hike out to the Hat Shop hoodoo formation, and the northern end of the long Under-the-Rim Trail. From this one lot at 8,300 feet, hikers can drop into the amphitheater on the Peekaboo Loop, head south along the Under-the-Rim Trail toward the Hat Shop (about 4.3 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain), or continue on to Rainbow Point 23 miles away for a multi-day backcountry trip.

Good to know

  • Bryce Point also anchors the south end of the paved, rim-level Rim Trail
  • Day hiking here needs only the park entrance fee; overnight camping along the Under-the-Rim Trail requires a backcountry permit from the Visitor Center
  • Dogs are not allowed on any of these trails, per park rules
  • Elevation and exposure make this a lightning risk zone during monsoon season, roughly July through September
