Mount Dutton

The Sevier Plateau's roof, reached the hard way

About

Mount Dutton is the high point of the Sevier Plateau, topping out just over 11,000 feet in the Dixie National Forest north of Bryce Canyon. With around 3,400 feet of prominence, it ranks among Utah's most prominent peaks, though it sits in the Sevier Plateau rather than the nearby Tushar Mountains.

Getting there

  • From Bryce Canyon, Highway 22 leads north toward Forest Road 125 and the Cottonwood Creek approach
  • A road runs close to the summit, but reaching it means over 20 miles of winding dirt road off the pavement — not a quick trip
  • The Snowbank Trail offers a hiking route up the west side, roughly 8.7 miles round trip with about 2,400 feet of climbing, alternating between forest and open meadow

This is remote Forest Service high country, well above and north of the park itself — expect solitude, changeable mountain weather, and no visitor facilities.
