Miller Knoll

A lava-field landmark on the Birch Springs Loop

(0)
Panguitch Lake Resort, UT

About

Miller Knoll marks the edge of a blocky, sparsely vegetated basaltic lava field on the Markagunt Plateau in Dixie National Forest — one of the youngest lava features on the plateau, extending from near Panguitch Lake to the knoll itself. It's a geological landmark rather than a hiking destination: no maintained trail leads to or over it.

The knoll is best known through the Birch Springs Loop OHV route, which ties back into the trail system just east of Miller Knoll after wrapping around nearby Birch Spring Knoll. For most visitors it registers as a point of interest along that longer off-road route — a stretch of exposed dark rock breaking up the surrounding pinyon-juniper and red-rock country — rather than somewhere to park and hike. This is Forest Service land, generally open to dispersed camping and dogs, with standard OHV permit and education requirements for anyone riding the loop.
