Mammoth Summit
Trailhead for the long way down to Ashdown Gorge
(0)
About
Mammoth Summit is a trailhead and junction just off Highway 143 on Cedar Mountain, and it's the starting point for one of the harder hikes in the Duck Creek Village area: the Ashdown Gorge Trail, a roughly 10-mile point-to-point descent with close to 4,000 feet of elevation loss into Ashdown Gorge Wilderness. It's a full-day undertaking, not a stroll, and needs a shuttle or car spot since it finishes well below where it starts.
What to know
- Trailhead sits at the north end of the Cedar Mountain Snowmobile Complex, doubling as a winter access point off Highway 143
- Ashdown Gorge Trail from here runs about 10 miles one-way with roughly 3,969 ft of elevation change — rated hard
- In winter this is a snowmobile staging area rather than a hiking trailhead; check Dixie National Forest seasonal status before visiting
- Dixie National Forest (USFS) rules apply — dogs generally allowed, no permit required for day use
