Day Hike
Lower Death Hollow
A wading trip through Escalante's deepest sandstone narrows
(0)
About
Death Hollow runs more than 20 miles as one of the longest tributaries of the Escalante River, and its lower stretch holds a permanent stream cutting through deep Navajo sandstone lined with pools, cascades, and small waterfalls. The way in — a steep slickrock descent requiring hands in a few spots — is more straightforward than route-finding once you're in the canyon, where dozens of crossings mean getting wet up to your knees is part of the trip.
What to know
- Can be done as a day hike to the best narrows, or as a 3+ day backpack from the top of the canyon
- Flash floods are a real risk here — postpone if rain is likely, and check conditions in Escalante beforehand
- Expect poison ivy along the route; a paid shuttle service is available in town for one-way trips
