Lower Barker Trailhead

Trailhead access to Griffin Top's lakes and mesa trails

About

Lower Barker Trailhead sits in the Barker Recreation Area of the Dixie National Forest, reached via Forest Road 149 west of Escalante. It's the access point for a network of hiking, biking, and horse trails climbing onto the Griffin Top mesa, part of the Boulder Mountains high country.

What connects here

  • The non-motorized Great Western Trail passes through, leading north toward nine backcountry fishing lakes
  • About 1.3 miles north on the Great Western Trail reaches a junction near Flat, Blue, and Yellow Lakes
  • Both Upper and Lower Barker trailheads serve this same trail network

This is Forest Service land rather than park land — dogs are generally fine on these trails, and dispersed camping is common in the area, a different set of rules than you'd find inside Bryce Canyon proper.
