A steep 1.5-mile trail with views toward Barney Top

About
Hog Ranch Trail is a 1.5-mile Dixie National Forest trail in the Red Canyon area of the Powell Ranger District, reached by driving west from Escalante on Highway 12. It's a shorter piece of a longer regional route rather than a standalone loop.
Route notes
- A steep, faint trail best suited to hikers comfortable with route-finding — it isn't a wide, obvious tread
- Often combined with a shuttle into a longer outing past Barney Top and Canaan Mountain for scenic views of both
- Open ridges, saddles, and meadows along the way mean real lightning exposure during thunderstorms — weather here changes fast, and cold conditions are possible year-round
As a Forest Service trail rather than a park trail, dogs are generally permitted and dispersed camping is common in the surrounding national forest, but this is backcountry terrain — go prepared for navigation and sudden weather.
