Day Hike
Hat Shop
Hoodoos wearing stone hats, far from the crowds
(0)
About
The Hat Shop is a cluster of hoodoos capped with wide grey boulders that balance on thin orange spires like hats on pins, distinct from the more famous formations in the main amphitheater to the north. Reaching it means dropping nearly 1,500 feet over the first 2 miles of the long Under-the-Rim Trail from Bryce Point, then climbing back out the way you came - the descent is the easy part.
Good to know
- 4 miles round-trip with about 1,436 feet of elevation change, typically 3-4 hours
- Rated strenuous, mostly because of the return climb
- Trailhead at Bryce Point; oversized vehicles aren't allowed there when the shuttle is running
- Long views south over the Grand Staircase, with far less foot traffic than the amphitheater trails
- A backcountry permit is required only if you're continuing past the Hat Shop for an overnight stay
