A high plateau stroll near Cedar Breaks, not Bryce

About
Hancock Trail (Forest Trail #32053, also called the Hancock Peak Trail) crosses the Markagunt Plateau in Dixie National Forest, roughly an hour west of Bryce Canyon near Cedar Breaks National Monument. It's described locally as a nice stroll across high plateau terrain rather than a strenuous climb, running between the Cedar Breaks area and Highway 89.
Good to know
- The trail starts at a large rock cairn, crosses Mammoth Creek, and follows cairns through open flats below Meadow Lake before entering spruce forest
- It passes a small dead lake and climbs a lava-rock hill, with tread that turns rough in spots where old lava beds cross the path, before leveling into aspen stands
- A side trail about 200 yards off the main route leads to a small, rock-ringed alpine lake
- The trail continues through aspen and spruce before opening onto Sage Valley and Forest Road 240, with small parking areas at both ends
This is Markagunt Plateau terrain near Cedar Breaks, not part of the Bryce Canyon or Paunsaugunt trail network — plan it as its own outing.
