Great Western Trail - Sweetwater Section
The gentlest grade among the GWT's Escalante-district sections

About
The Sweetwater Section (Forest Trail #34001.2) is 9.4 miles one-way through Dixie National Forest near Powell Point, rated easy for hikers and horses and moderate for mountain bikes — a gentler grade than several neighboring GWT sections. Most of it follows open roads or old roadbed closed to motorized traffic, rather than singletrack tread.
Good to know
- The trailhead is reached from Tropic: west on Highway 12 to the Bryce Canyon/Antimony junction, then north on Johns Valley Road toward Antimony, turning onto Forest Road 132 toward Pine Lake Campground
- Water may be available in South Creek along the way but isn't reliable — bring your own
- As an easier-grade section open to hikers, horses, and bikes, it's a reasonable option for a longer but less strenuous day out than the steeper Horse Creek or Griffin Top sections nearby
Pine Lake Campground at the trailhead makes this a workable base if you're stringing multiple GWT sections together over a few days.
