Grand View Trail
A ridge walk past hoodoos and a hidden volcano.

About
Grand View Trail follows a ridge crest through Dixie National Forest near Alton, running as a narrow double-track that branches off Forest Road 106. It passes right by the west side of Black Butte's summit — though it doesn't climb to the top itself, since no trail actually reaches Black Butte's summit — and opens up views over the surrounding forest and cliff bands.
What's along the way
- Orange and white eroded hoodoos visible along cliff bands to the north, a smaller-scale echo of Cedar Breaks National Monument
- Connects with the Camp Eli Trail at a ridge-crest junction
- Most of the nearby Camp Eli Trail has been folded into this same Grand View network
This is Forest Service backcountry — dogs are generally fine and dispersed camping is common along the surrounding forest roads. Expect a quiet, low-traffic ridge walk rather than a developed overlook, and check current road access before heading out.
