Flake Mountain
A plateau summit above John's Valley
About
Flake Mountain climbs to about 8,048 feet on the Sevier Plateau above John's Valley, in the Powell Ranger District of Dixie National Forest straddling Kane and Garfield Counties near Bryce Canyon. The Forest Service has used prescribed burns in this stretch of forest in recent years as part of routine work to clear overgrown fuel and reduce wildfire risk to the surrounding area, so expect to see burn-scarred or recovering forest patches depending on when you visit.
There's no developed trailhead or maintained summit trail tied to Flake Mountain in Forest Service recreation listings; this is backcountry terrain reached by forest roads through John's Valley rather than a signed hike. Dispersed camping and dogs off-leash are typical on this Forest Service ground, a different rule set than inside Bryce Canyon National Park itself. Check current forest road and fire-management status with the Powell Ranger District before heading in.
