The high start of Red Canyon's big downhill run
(0)
About
Coyote Hollow Trailhead is the upper access point for the Thunder Mountain Trail system in Red Canyon, part of Dixie National Forest just west of Bryce Canyon National Park. Most riders and hikers use it as the starting point for the popular downhill run toward the lower trailhead on Highway 12, dropping through colorful hoodoo terrain and pine forest with wide canyon views the whole way down.
Good to know
- Reached via a gravel road (signed for Fremont ATV Trail) off Highway 12 about 8 miles up Red Canyon, then roughly 2 miles in to the trailhead itself
- Most visitors run the trail one-way with a shuttle to the lower Highway 12 trailhead, about 8 miles and 3,000 feet of descent
- This is Forest Service land, more permissive than the park next door — dispersed camping and dogs are generally fine here
- Afternoon thunderstorms are a real risk on exposed sections in summer
