Day Hike

Cedar Wash Arch Trail

A short scramble to a pale sandstone arch south of Escalante

(0)
Escalante, UT

About

Cedar Wash Arch is a 24-foot span of white Entrada sandstone off Cedar Wash Road south of Escalante — a different color palette than the red-rock arches most visitors expect in southern Utah. The trail from the pullout is short, around a mile round trip with modest elevation gain, and brings you to the clifftop above the arch rather than down at its base. It's unmaintained and easy to lose in places, so treat the distance as an estimate and bring a way to navigate.

What to know

  • Drive south from Center Street in Escalante, which turns into Proctor Road and then Cedar Wash Road, about 9 miles to the trailhead
  • Best viewed from above with a telephoto lens; the arch is easier to photograph from the separate lower viewpoint
  • Dogs are allowed on leash; best conditions run March through November
