A ridge with four landmarks in view at once

About

Canaan Peak anchors a scenic loop trail in Dixie National Forest with 360-degree views taking in Powell Point, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area from one ridge. The climb starts west from the trailhead, and after about a quarter mile hikers reach the ridge top where Bryce Canyon and the Blues come into view, with the ridges and canyons of the Kaiparowits Plateau spreading south into the monument.

Good to know

  • Trailhead access is off Highway 12 between mile markers 44 and 45, turning south on FR 146 (signed South Hollow and Canaan Peak) and continuing 4.7 miles to a shallow stock pond
  • Open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders; closed to OHVs and e-bikes
  • Ridgeline and open terrain here are exposed to summer thunderstorms — plan to be off the ridge before afternoon storms build
