About

Buck Knoll is a summit on the Paunsaugunt Plateau in Garfield County, in the Dixie National Forest backcountry not far from Alton and Hatch. Note that the name overlaps with a well-documented volcanic cinder cone nearby (Bald Knoll) that's sometimes also called Buck Knoll — but this is mapped as its own distinct summit rather than that same feature, near Sheep Creek Flat.

The area has seen selective logging over the years, with spruce and ponderosa pine holding steady while aspen has declined — typical high-plateau forest history for this part of the Paunsaugunt. There's no developed trail or visitor infrastructure documented here; this reads as backcountry terrain rather than a signed hike. Forest Service land generally allows dogs and dispersed camping, but check current road conditions and land status before heading out, since access is by dirt road through National Forest terrain.
