Black Butte
A forested volcanic hump few hikers reach.

About
Black Butte is a volcanic peak in Dixie National Forest south of Highway 12 near Tropic Reservoir, a large forested hump that draws few visitors despite its size. No road or trail actually reaches the summit — the Grand View Trail passes close by on the peak's west side, but the final push to the top means scrambling and bushwhacking off-trail.
Getting into the area
- Access via the Big Hollow Trail, connecting through Camp Eli Trail to Grand View Trail along the ridge
- Orange and white eroded hoodoos are visible along cliff bands to the north, a smaller-scale echo of Cedar Breaks
- Good dirt roads reach close to the base for those not summiting
This is Forest Service backcountry, not a park trail — dogs and dispersed camping are generally fine, but there's no maintained summit route, so treat any top-out as an off-trail scramble and come with route-finding experience.
