Big Horn Canyon Trailhead
A washboard-road trailhead into a colorful sandstone canyon
(0)
About
The Big Horn Canyon trailhead sits about 4.5 miles down Hole-in-the-Rock Road from Highway 12, a washboard dirt road that's usually passable in a regular car but can turn greasy after rain. From here, a route runs roughly three miles through Big Horn Canyon — a tributary of Harris Wash — alternating between slickrock and sand as it cuts into Navajo sandstone that shows an unusually wide range of color and texture.
What to know
- No developed trailhead or parking lot — just a pullout along Hole-in-the-Rock Road
- The route is a moderately difficult, sometimes hard-to-follow path down to Harris Wash; download an offline map before you go
- Check road conditions before driving in, especially after recent rain
