A quiet forest trail toward Black Butte.

About
Big Hollow Trail is a Dixie National Forest route near Alton that runs past Big Hollow Spring on its way toward Black Butte, the volcanic hump that dominates this stretch of backcountry. It's a moderately challenging out-and-back of a few miles, with rocky sections and wildflower stretches, and it sees few other hikers even in summer.
Good to know
- Connects into the Camp Eli Trail and Grand View Trail network for a longer route toward Black Butte's summit area
- Forest Service land — dogs are generally fine and dispersed camping is common nearby
- No facilities at the trailhead; come prepared for a backcountry outing
Because this trail links to a longer network, check a current Dixie National Forest map before you go so you know which junction gets you where.
