Deep canyon views at the quiet end of the Scenic Drive

About

Ponderosa Canyon Overlook is a viewpoint near the southern end of Bryce Canyon's 18-mile Scenic Drive, located at approximately mile 15 between Agua Canyon and Black Birch Canyon. At roughly 8,900 feet elevation, it is one of the higher stops on the drive and sits in the park's transition zone where the dominant trees shift from the ponderosa pine of lower elevations to blue spruce and Douglas fir — a detail that trips up the name, since visitors sometimes expect the namesake ponderosa to be the prominent species here.

What You See

The overlook looks out over a deep canyon filled with densely forested slopes and scattered hoodoos — a quieter, more wooded composition than the open amphitheaters at the northern viewpoints. The depth and scale of the canyon are more apparent in person than in photographs. On clear days the view extends toward the Grand Staircase to the east and southeast.

Practical Notes

  • A quick stop requiring only 5–10 minutes unless you're shooting photography
  • No hiking trail departs from this overlook
  • Parking is available in the paved pullout; the area is wheelchair accessible
  • Combine with Agua Canyon (just north) for two strong viewpoints in rapid succession
  • This section of the drive sees lighter traffic than the Bryce Amphitheater area — a reasonable reason to push past the popular northern stops
