Panorama Point
Wide-open views above Kodachrome Basin's stone spires
About
Panorama Point sits within Kodachrome Basin State Park, a compact but scenically dense park located about 9 miles south of Cannonville via Cottonwood Canyon Road — roughly 35 miles east of Panguitch. The viewpoint caps the Panorama Trail loop and gives a broad look across the park's landscape of sedimentary spires, red rock formations, and open desert.
The Trail
The Panorama Trail is a 2.9-mile loop rated easy to moderate. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle elevation at the point itself. The trail passes through some of the park's best scenery, including its unusual stone spires — called sand pipes — that rise straight out of the canyon floor. The full loop takes most visitors 1.5 to 2 hours. The signed trailhead is on the left side of the park road, 1.6 miles from Cottonwood Canyon Road.
What You See
From the Panorama Point overlook, views extend across the basin's colorful striped rock layers and out toward the broader Grand Staircase landscape. On clear days the horizon stretches far into Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Grosvenor Arch, one of the larger double arches in Utah, is located about 10 miles southeast of the park along Cottonwood Canyon Road and worth adding to the drive.
Park Access
Kodachrome Basin State Park charges a day-use fee for entry. The park also has a campground, cabins, and a small store, making it possible to base here for a night and explore the surrounding monument roads. The access road (Cottonwood Canyon Road) from Cannonville is paved through the park entrance. Check road conditions before continuing south on Cottonwood Canyon Road, which becomes unpaved and can close after rain.
