North Creek Grill

Locally sourced dinners under dark skies on Byway 12

(113)
Escalante, UT

About

North Creek Grill sits on the western edge of Escalante along UT-12, about 35 miles west of Bryce Canyon. The restaurant is one of the more distinctive dining options on the entire Bryce–Escalante corridor: it focuses on internationally inspired, locally sourced cuisine, drawing ingredients from Utah farms and regional purveyors. That's a different proposition from the standard American diner fare that dominates most of the Byway 12 gateway towns.

Food and Atmosphere

The menu changes with availability but consistently reflects a thoughtful, scratch-kitchen approach. The dining room looks out over surrounding canyons and mesa — useful context given that Escalante sits inside a certified International Dark Sky Community, so the view through those windows after dark is genuinely clear. The restaurant leans toward an intimate, reservations-recommended experience rather than a drop-in diner.

Hours and Access

Dinner service only: Wednesday through Sunday, opening at 5 PM (closing at 8 PM Wed/Thu/Sun, 9 PM Fri/Sat). Closed Monday and Tuesday. The limited schedule means planning ahead matters — if your Byway 12 travel lands on a Monday, you'll want a backup plan. The restaurant accepts reservations, offers takeout, and is wheelchair accessible.

Practical Notes

The address (3680 W UT-12) puts it at the western end of Escalante, a short drive from the town center. If you're coming from Bryce heading toward Capitol Reef or the Slot Canyon country around Hole-in-the-Rock Road, North Creek is a logical dinner stop in either direction.

We discovered this charming and unique restaurant while staying at the Slot Canyons Inn. This farm-to-table (FTT) restaurant is a hidden gem in Escalante, Utah. It uses locally sourced pasture-raised meats, seasonal produce, and is topped off with stunning canyon views. The restaurant offers a sophisticated but relaxing dining experience with either indoor or outdoor seating, but we highly recommend choosing the outdoor option to experience the stunning views of the high desert. It should be noted that the restaurant is situated in an International Dark Sky community, offering great night-sky views. The restaurant vibe is best described as a casual yet upscale dining room that doubles as an art gallery featuring local Utah artists. They offer a rotating menu, which focuses on global influences combined with local ingredients. With an emphasis on high quality and refined nature of the food, you can expect grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, worldly small plates, and a curated selection of beer and wine. Our dinner was truly an exquisite culinary journey and was a feast for the senses. We would be remiss in our review if we did not recognize the amazing staff, in particular, Thomas and Merissa, for making this dinner an unforgettable repast. Note: photos of the night sky were taken from the restaurant and upper balcony.

The staff and chef made us feel welcome and cared for. All of the food was so delicious that we ate there every night we were in town! Local artwork was featured and available to purchase. Atmosphere and aesthetic was upscale but accessible to all. Would come again!

Amazing experience from start to finish. We sat outside and had a great service. The wontons and fries were both incredible…probably the best fries I’ve had (yes, even better than mazza). The roasted beets, cabbage, and potatoes were all phenomenal, and pairing everything with the steak took it to another level. Great food, great atmosphere, and just an overall awesome night. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back.

We had an amazing dinner here! We loved everything we tried. For our appetizer we had the wontons; the sauce was so good that we asked chef for the recipe (and he gave it to us!). The spring salad was next- to die for! We split steak and the pasta of the day- all of it was amazing. We are “foodies” and this is great food! Finally, the setting is amazing- intimate and charming and set in the gorgeous Utah mountains. Stay here and linger a while!
